News Analysis
On February 28, 2007, a report "Poll results sign of things to come in U.P.: Rajnath" stated that the BJP has made major gains in Punjab and raised its tally from two MLAs in the previous Assembly to 19. Another report on the same page "BJP comes up with a surprise in Punjab" stated that the party had raised its tally from three to 19. In the 2002 elections, the BJP had won three seats. One of the BJP members resigned and became an MP. That seat was later won by the Congress. The caption for the graphic "New trains on the block" has produced a few comments from readers, about "on the block". According to the dictionaries, it means "up for auction"; "deleting, cancelling or chopping off from service, etc" (an American expression). The item was on the introduction of new trains. The opening sentence in the first paragraph of a report "Quota: apex court reiterates exclusion of `creamy layer'" (February 24, 2007) was: "The Supreme Court on Friday reiterated the Mandal Commission's ruling that the `creamy layer' from among the reserved categories should be excluded from the benefit of reservation to backward classes." The Mandal Commission made no reference to the creamy layer among backward castes not to speak of its exclusion from the benefit of reservation. The sentence should have read: "The Supreme Court reiterated its ruling in the Mandal Commission case" In a report "Treaty issue: [Supreme] Court seeks response of Centre, CBI" (February 28, 2007, page 1), there was a reference to the Extradition Treaty of 1962. It should have been Extradition Act of 1962. The expansion of PO in a report "Arrangements reviewed for Council polls [to be held on March 17]" (Visakhapatnam, February 21, 2007, page 3) should have been presiding officer, and not polling officer as was published. The Hyderabad Bureau clarifies that the Srikakulam District Joint Collector, who is the Returning Officer, clarifies that the right word is Presiding Officer. Two polling officers will assist the PO. In a report on the second round of the second Kolkata Open international chess tournament, "Gopal stuns Pantsulia Levan" ("Sport", February 27, 2007), GM R.B. Ramesh's score (after two rounds) should have been 1, and not 2 as was published. It is the policy of The Hindu to correct significant errors as soon as possible.
