HASSAN: With the resignation of Hassan zilla panchayat president Annappa Shetty and vice-president Kamakshi Raju, the decks have been cleared for the election of the new leaders. Hutchhe Gowda, who represents the Gandsi zilla panchayat constituency, is tipped to become the new president while Mahadevamma from Nuggenahalli constituency in Chennaraypatna taluk is the likely candidate for the vice-president's post. According to the norms, the president is to be elected from the Other Backward Classes (OBC) "A" category while the vice-president's post is reserved for a woman from the Scheduled Castes (SCs). As Ms. Raju, the current vice-president, and Ms. Mahadevamma are the only SC women in the 39-member panchayat, the latter will automatically get appointed to the post. On Tuesday, after the Karnataka Development Programme meeting, Minister for Public Works and Energy H.D. Revanna, who is in charge of the district, convened a meeting of JD(S) members and left the decision to them as to whether they wanted the same president and vice-president to continue. When the members called for a change, Mr. Revanna directed Mr. Shetty to resign. Once his resignation is accepted, the Deputy Commissioner will announce the schedule for the elections.
