Power theft cases detected

NEW DELHI: Intensifying their drive against power theft in the Capital, BYPL enforcement teams conducted 80-odd raids in three days in Jhilmil, Dilshad Garden, Krishna Nagar, Laxmi Nagar, Mayur Vihar, Yamuna Vihar, Karawal Nagar, Nand Nagri, Chandni Chowk, Kashmere Gate, Paharganj and Karol Bagh areas.

The teams detected power theft of over 630 kW, yielding nearly Rs.2.5 crores in penalties. "Most of those raided were using stolen power for running commercial establishments and residential premises," said a BSES official.

`Review funds'

NEW DELHI: Union Panchayati Raj Minister Mani Shankar Aiyar has called for a review of the limited funds available for HIV/AIDS and said there was a need to sensitise bureaucrats and public representatives at the grassroots about the disease and its prevention.

Speaking at the launch of a book, "HIV/AIDS: Public Understanding and Attitude", by Gauhar Raza, Surjit Singh and C.S. Pran here on Wednesday, Mr. Aiyar advised Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan to first assess the difference between the cost of today's required prevention and the amount of damage it would cause after 10 years if no action was taken.

Mother's Day

NEW DELHI: Mother's Pride celebrated its Annual Day by organising a two-day function for its pre and senior secondary schools at Siri Fort Auditorium here.

On the occasion, Sparsh Special School, a school for mentally and physically challenged children, was also launched. A cheque for Rs. 51 lakhs was presented to Sparsh Foundation and a book titled "Celebrate Childhood" was released on the concluding day on Wednesday. Ghazal maestro Jagjit Singh, Bollywood actor Anupam Kher and cricketer Ajay Jadeja were among the guests.

Runway blocked

NEW DELHI: A Mumbai-bound Indian airline flight blocked the secondary runway at Delhi airport for over half an hour on Wednesday evening after the pilot detected a leak in the hydraulic system when it was about to take off.

The incident took place at 8-10 p.m. The aircraft was then towed to the bay. "After a change of planes, the flight took off at 11-45 p.m.," said an official.
