Budget session from March 21

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: The Delhi Cabinet on Thursday decided to convene the Budget Session of the Delhi Assembly from March 21. The decision was taken at a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit.

It was decided that on March 21 the proceedings would begin with the Lieutenant-Governor's address and then the customary vote-on-account would be secured for a period of three months. The House would then take a recess in view of the impending elections to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi and would reconvene on April 11. The session would then run up to April 23.

The vote-on-account had been necessitated due to the announcement of elections to the MCD. The model code of conduct had come into force with immediate effect on February 23 when Delhi State Election Commissioner S. P. Marwah had announced that elections to the MCD would be held on April 5.

While the notification for the elections will be issued on March 10, the entire process will be completed by April 9 and the new House will be in place by the April 10 deadline.
