Woman killed by bus on accident-prone stretch

Staff Reporter

TAMBARAM : A 62-year-old woman was killed on the spot when she was hit by a government bus near Tambaram on Wednesday night.

Jeyammal, wife of Selvanayagam of Ambedkar Street in Perungalathur, was crossing the road when the accident took place.

The bus was on its way to Kancheepuram.

The Mudichur Road connecting the Grand Southern Trunk Road at Tambaram and the Vandalur-Wallajabad Radial Road at Mannivakkam has become one of the most accident-prone roads in the southern suburbs

Following an increase in the volume of traffic, the State Highways Department started improvement works, including widening and provision of medians on this road.

Though work began about two years, it is yet to be completed, residents pointed out.

Rally planned

Meanwhile, residents of Old Perungalathur and Mudichur would take out a silent rally on Sunday to draw the State Government's attention to the increasing rate of accidents in the area.

Elected representatives of Perungalathur and Mudichur, members of civic groups and volunteers of youth organisations would be taking part in the rally, which would begin with participants observing a two-minute silence in memory of three youths killed in accidents involving sand lorries on the Mudichur Road in the past one week.

Then they would take out a silent rally from Parvathi Nagar.

The rally would culminate in a public meeting where discussions would be conducted to urge the Government to pay more attention to road safety.
