Chennai : The Chennai Corporation is set to involve the voluntary organisation Exnora's resident welfare associations in many of its initiatives for civic improvement in the city.

Shortly after he was elected unopposed by the Corporation Council on Thursday, City Mayor M. Subramanian told reporters that the Corporation and Exnora would jointly conduct an awareness campaign to control mosquito breeding.

Mr. Subramanian will launch the `mosquito musketeers' initiative at the Exnora headquarters in T. Nagar at 5 p.m. on Friday. He will distribute fogging equipment and insecticide to Exnora Innovator Clubs. Mosquito musketeers are volunteers who will visit homes and offices to offer tips on prevention of mosquito breeding.

On Saturday, the Mayor and a team of Corporation officials are scheduled to participate in a meeting conducted by Villivakkam Exnora Innovators Club to discuss solutions to civic problems in the locality. Exnora members are also interacting with the Corporation on solid waste segregation and protection of Elliots Beach.

The Mayor, who was elected to the post for the second time in five months, said he would resume visits to various zones to ensure that facilities such as roads, storm water drains, streetlights and parks were in order.

Relatives of the newly-elected councillors and DMK members thronged the Council Hall to congratulate the Mayor and weighed him down with shawls. DMDK members attended only the election of the Mayor and left before the proceedings of the Council meeting.

The Council passed a resolution thanking the State government for launching the desalination project in Kattupalli near Minjur and announcing a new desalination plant for South Chennai. Elections to vacant positions in the Standing Committees and Ward Committees of the Corporation will be held on Monday.

The Ripon Building entrance was decorated with DMK flags and hoardings carrying pictures of Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, Local Administration Minister M.K. Stalin and Mayor M. Subramanian. A troupe playing classical music on a platform in the Corporation campus added to the festivity, as DMK-led alliance councillors celebrated their re-entry to the Council and the birthday of Mr. Stalin.
