Slew of programmes to mark DYFI conference

P.T. Usha to flag off mini-marathon on Saturday

CHENNAI
: Arjuna awardee P.T. Usha will be flagging off a mini-marathon from the Labour Statue on Saturday morning in the run-up to the eighth All India Conference of the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI).
Special invitees include Arjuna awardee Shiny Wilson, former Director General of Police, Walter Davaram, athletes Jyotirmoy Sikdar and Santhi Soundararajan.
The 8th All India DYFI Conference will be held in the city between May 8 and 11.
Athletes and students will be taking part in the marathon, organised by the DYFI Sports Association, with categories for men and women above 20, between 16 and 20 and below 16. Cultural events, commemoration of Bhagat Singh day and blood donation camps are among the event scheduled for March and April.
Bhagat Singh Day will be commemorated on March 23 across the State with programmes to propagate the revolutionary's ideas and release of a book with detailing his life and containing all his writings. Cultural and literary competitions for school and college students have been scheduled on March 24 and 25. Several troupes will be performing cultural programmes in the city throughout April. Open-air seminars will be held on April 14 to mark Ambedkar's birth anniversary and the Tamil New Year. On April 23, blood donation camps will be held to mark the murder of Leelavathi, the Madurai Corporation councillor who was hacked to death in 1997 for taking on the water-tanker mafia.
