KHAMMAM:
Eight persons, including four jawans, were killed in a landmine blast triggered by CPI (Maoist) squads at Mettagudem near the Injaram base camp on the Andhra Pradesh-Chhattisgarh border at 8.30 a.m. on Thursday. The Maoists relieved the police of nine weapons including two AK 47s after the incident.
The incident occurred when some police personnel of the Naga battalion were returning to the base camp along with a group of civilians in a lorry after the night-long combing operations in the forest area. The lorry, carrying at least 14 persons, was targeted with landmine by the dalams in waiting.
The lorry driver, Sudhir Naidu, and cleaner Sanjai, both belonging to Malkangri in neighbouring Orissa, were among those killed. Two Salwa Judum activists Bhuma Tammaiaj and Soyam Joga, both promoted as special police officers accompanying the Naga forces were also killed.
Police stations on the borders were put on alert. The injured were shifted to hospital.
