Mulayam Singh to file review petition in court

Seeks review of ruling in disproportionate assets case

LUCKNOW : Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mulayam Singh will file a petition in the Supreme Court seeking a review of its ruling in the disproportionate assets case involving him and members of his family.

The Samajwadi Party will request that the inquiry be conducted by a sitting judge or any other agency, its national general secretary Ram Gopal Yadav said at a press conference here on Thursday.Prof. Yadav said the party had no faith in the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The CBI was a tool in the hands of Congress-led UPA Government for harassing its political opponents. The agency's track record showed that it did not function as an independent agency, he said.

Why then had the State Government referred the Nithari serial killings and Kavita Chaudhary case to the CBI? The SP leader said this was done on the demand of the political parties.

Prof. Yadav accused the Congress of harassing the Chief Minister. He said that the Congress campaign would have no effect on Mr. Singh and the Samajwadi Party.

Stating that the Supreme Court had not passed any judgement in the disproportionate assets case, he said a wrong interpretation of the ruling would amount to contempt of court.

The Congress has demanded Mr. Singh's resignation.

The chief spokesperson of the Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee Akhilesh Pratap Singh said that the decision to file a review petition suggested that there was truth in the charges.

The Congress would make the disproportionate assets case an election issue.

National spokesperson of the Bharatiya Janata Party Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi drew a parallel between Railway Minister Lalu Prasad and the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister.

He said the people of the State wanted to know how Mr. Singh amassed so much wealth.
