Thiruvananthapuram: The Railways has decided to carry out temporary repair work on the twin rail and road Venduruthy Bridge that was damaged after a dredger operating for the Cochin Port Trust hit the bridge last week. A top Railway official said the 45-metre deep pile of the bridge had broken in the accident. "The pile had broken at a depth of 3.5 metre and has tilted. The idea is to put a sleeve on the broken pile and concrete it as a temporary measure to allow traffic," the official said. The temporary work would take at least 15 days and would involve a cost of Rs.6-7 lakh. A former Professor of the Indian Institute of Technology, Chennai, P.K. Aravindan is already in Kochi to study the damage. Railway sources said the report would be available on Friday. Rs.60-70 lakh would be needed to construct regular piles and the design would be recommend by Mr. Aravindan. Cochin Port Trust would have to bear the cost of construction, the official said.As many as three rakes of containers (400 wagons) and a loco was trapped following the accident. The containers were meant for Delhi and Bangalore. Nearly 10,000 tonnes of imported ammonia for the FACT was also held up following the accident.
