KOCHI: The Kochi Tourist Boat Operators Association will ensure that all boats operating in the Kochi backwaters will have required safety system on board, Association leaders said. Talking to presspersons on Wednesday, Association president C.M. Ravindranath and vice-president T.P. Antony said that all boats were operating in the area with valid licences. The boats that violated the safety norms would not be permitted to operate in the area, they said. They alleged that the police were unnecessarily harassing the boat operators even though the boats had all the required documents. Boat drivers were charged for rash and negligent driving. The Association leaders said the boats were exhibiting the safety instructions issued by the Cochin Port Trust on all boats. The Association approached the Cochin Port Trust with a request for organising refresher courses for boat crew and owners on safety aspects. After the Thattekkad boat accident, the general public was having apprehensions about the safety of boat cruises. The Association would provide all required passenger safety amenities, they said.
