Fire at plastic factory

KOCHI: A factory manufacturing plastic items at Chunangamveli, Aluva, was partially destroyed in a fire on Thursday evening. The Fire and Rescue Services authorities said that fire engulfed Saphala Polymers at around 6 p.m. The flames were brought under control by 8.15 p.m. by fire tenders which arrived from Aluva, Ernakulam, Perumbavoor, Thrikkakkara and Angamaly. A good portion of the machinery of the factory was damaged in the fire. - Staff Reporter

IMA hails decision to drop service tax

KOCHI: The State branch of the Indian Medical Association has welcomed the decision to drop a proposal to include medical profession under the purview of service tax. This move was opposed by the medical fraternity in the pre-budget exercise when the Finance Minister was scouting for more sectors to be brought under the service tax purview. The proposal had come up last year too, said R. Ramesh, State secretary of the Association. - Staff Reporter

Workshop for lawyers

Kochi: A workshop on `Engineering the art of negotiation' will be held for lawyers, High Court judges and retired judges here on March 3. It is being conducted by John Shulman, experienced attorney, negotiator and public speaker. The Kerala High Court Advocates Association is sponsoring the workshop. Acting Chief Justice K.S. Radhakrishnan will inaugurate the workshop. - Staff Reporter

Railway action

council not happy

KOCHI: The Action Council for Railway Development in Kerala has termed the jubilation over Kerala getting its due in the Railway Budget as inappropriate. Though the Railways gets Rs.1,100 crore each year from Kerala, the State has been given only Rs.301 crore for developing the rail network, said council chairman P. Somachoodan Nair.
