All set for Attukal Pongala

Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The services of 200 priests have been requisitioned for sprinkling `theertham' on the pongala offerings to the presiding deity of the Attukal Bhagavathy Temple on March 3, president of the temple trust R. Gopinathan Nair said here on Thursday.

He, along with other members of the trust, was addressing a press conference. A chartered helicopter will shower flower petals on the temple premises when the Pongala hearth is lit at 10.45 a.m. on March 3. A `chenda melam' will be sounded to announce the beginning of the Pongala.

In order to ensure adequate supply of drinking water to devotees, more than 100 water tanks have been installed in and around the temple. Repair has been carried out on the roads leading to the temple. Special lighting has been provided on the temple premises. A control room of the KSEB has been opened at the temple, he said.

The drainage division of the Kerala Water Authority (KWA) has taken adequate steps to prevent clogging of the sewerage network in the area. Manholes have been cleaned and drainage channels de-clogged as part of a pre-Pongala drive. The department of Health has opened five medical camps at Attukal to provide assistance to the devotees.
