Relief for M.F. Husain

NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court on Thursday exempted noted painter M.F. Husain from appearance in person before a trial court here in connection with a bunch of complaints filed against him at different places across the country accusing him of hurting the religious sentiments of Hindus by painting their gods and goddesses in an indecent manner.

Justice Ravindra Bhatt allowed a revision petition by the artist challenging an order by Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Kamini Lau directing him to be present in her court on March 6.

Dismissing the magistrate's order, Mr. Justice Bhatt said the painter's lawyer could represent him in the court.

Ms. Lau has been hearing the complaints against the painter following their transfer to her court by the Supreme Court on a request by Mr. Husain.
