2,000 appear for test, interview for jobs in small industries

BANGALORE: About 2,000 candidates appeared for a walk-in written test and interview for jobs in small-scale industries under the Suvarna Kayaka Udyoga Shikshana Scheme of the Industries Department at Kamakshipalya here on Friday.

The programme was part of the Government's plan to provide employment to one lakh unemployed youth before March 31. Candidates who have passed ITI examination and under-graduates from Bangalore Urban and Rural, Kolar, Mandya and Tumkur districts appeared for the test.

The selected candidates would be offered jobs by small-scale industries located in Bangalore, said Minister for Industries Katta Subramanya Naidu.

Addressing a programme attended by entrepreneurs and candidates, Mr. Naidu said 20,000 graduates and undergraduates had been provided jobs under the scheme. The industries department would fulfil its promise of providing jobs to one lakh unemployed youth before March 31 this year, he said.

Stating that the growth of small-scale industries was not up to the mark, he said the Government would announce a scheme for upgrading their technology in the Budget (2007-08).

The proposal on shifting of the industries at Kamakshipalya has been delayed following opposition from farmers for acquisition of land at Ganapathihalli, on the outskirts of the city.

The department would identify a new plot to shift the industries, he said.

Kamakshipalya has become a congested area and there is no space for expansion for existing industries. Started on a small scale, a majority of units have now become medium-scale enterprises. Most of the industries were also located in residential areas.

Minister for Small-scale Industries Shivananda Narayana Naik said the department has planned to increase the stipend of Rs. 750 per month provided by the Government under the scheme.

Now, a stipend of Rs. 1,500 is being paid to each candidate — Rs. 750 per month by the Government and Rs. 750 by industries providing training.
