Fishermen told not to cross maritime boundary

Deep-sea fishing off Tuticorin suggested

RAMANATHAPURAM: S. Vijayakumar, Director, Fisheries, has asked fishermen not to cross the International Maritime Boundary Line.

He was speaking to reporters here on Friday after a series of meetings with Coast Guard, Navy, police, revenue, fisheries and forest officials of the Gulf of Mannar Marine National Park, in the backdrop of attacks by the Sri Lankan Navy against fishermen from Tamil Nadu.

Along with Collector R. Kirlosh Kumar and Superintendent of Police R. Thirugnanam, Mr. Vijayakumar met representatives of associations of fishermen.

Fishermen said they had no option but to fish around Katchatheevu. After hearing their views, Mr. Vijayakumar told them about the `ground realities.'

Deep-sea fishing

Mr. Vijayakumar said he had told the representatives of fishermen not to cross the International Maritime Boundary Line, and suggested that instead they take up deep-sea fishing off Tuticorin. Deep-sea fishing from the Vattanam area was also discussed.

Asked about steps taken by the Government following the recent incidents of firing by the Sri Lankan Navy, he said Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi had written to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
