COIMBATORE: Investments in the tourism sector can create 48 per cent more jobs in the hospitality industry, Suresh Rajan, Minister for Tourism and Culture, said here on Friday. The sector was going to generate more than 80 lakh jobs in 10 years, he added. Inaugurating a national hospitality job fair at the VLB Janakiammal College of Arts and Science, he said the scope for both skilled and unskilled labour in the sector would to increase. The State had registered an annual growth of 23 per cent in foreign and domestic tourists. The number of foreign tourists who had visited the State was 13,35,661 last year. The State held the second place in the country in attracting foreign tourists and it was placed third in terms of domestic tourists. The scope for employment for students trained in hospitality was high, especially in cities such as Coimbatore, he added. The Government was carrying on renovation of Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation (TTDC) hotels in Coimbatore, Udhagamandalam, Kodaikanal, Mamallapuram, Madurai and Rameswaram with an outlay of Rs.3.5 crore. The Minister also urged private parties to come forward to invest in tourism. India had recorded the fastest growth rate in the tourism sector. It was growing at eight per cent, Kamal Sharma, Secretary General, Federation of Hotels and Restaurants Association of India, New Delhi, said.
