Jammu : The Jammu-Srinagar National Highway 1-A reopened on Saturday providing relief to hundreds of passengers struck here and enabling essential commodities to reach their destinations.
Convoy movement
Up-convoy movement continued without any disruption as the vehicles carrying essential commodities were given preference. Till evening, 2,300 vehicles had reached their destination. Despite occasional rains the repairing of the highway is being carried out by the Army on a warfooting. Operation Hamsafar, launched at the initiative of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, extended help to many people reach their destination. Aircraft have been plying continuously to move the passengers to Jammu, Udhampur and Srinagar.
Transit camps
In addition, the Army-established ad hoc transit camps at Jammu and Udhampur are ensuring the necessary human support to the transients. Transportation has also been organised by the Army between the airport and the camps.
