NEW DELHI: Byelections to the two Rajya Sabha seats from Punjab and Haryana that fell vacant following the death of sitting members, Sukhbuns Kaur Bhinder and Sumitra Mahajan, would be held on March 29, the Election Commission announced on Saturday. The election process will begin on March 12 with the notification, and nominations can be filed till March 19. The last date for withdrawal of candidature has been set for March 22. Polling will take place between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. on March 29, and the results will be announced within an hour. The first vacancy arose when Ms. Bhinder, a Congress member from Punjab, died on December 15. Ms. Mahajan, an Indian National Lok Dal member from Haryana, died on January 19. The two members elected to the Rajya Sabha against these vacancies will hold the membership for the remaining part of their term. In the case of Ms. Bhinder, her term was to end on April 9, 2010. And, Ms. Mahajan's term was due to end on April 9, 2008.
