Procurement remedy to price-rise malady

Rythu Sangham, CPI want Government to keep buffer stocks also

ANANTAPUR: Andhra Pradesh Rythu Sangham and Communist Party of India have urged the State and Central Governments to take measures like large-scale procurement of commodities and maintaining sufficient buffer stock to bring down the soaring prices. They alleged that budget proposals at both levels had no mention of any measures in this direction.

Talking to newspersons here on Saturday, State president of APRS K. Ramakrishna, district secretary A. Katamaiah, district secretary of CPI M.V. Ramana and deputy secretary C. Jaffer said there was no hope of prices coming down in the near future.

Previously Governments used to maintain about 80 to 85 lakh tonnes of foodgrains as buffer stock. But, that was not the case now. The Government should procure commodities like rice, wheat and pulses, they suggested.

No to auction

The CPI leaders also opposed auction of commodities seized by civil supplies department during raids on 960 traders' stock points recently. Illegally stocked commodities worth about Rs. 80 crores were seized. The party would obstruct auctions and would continue agitation against price rise.

The Government had authorised Joint Collectors to conduct auction of such seized stocks.
