Large turnout of devotees at Masi Magam festival

GOOD RESPONSE: A large number of devotees throng Vaithikuppam in Puducherry on the occasion of `Masi magam'on Saturday.

Puducherry: The `Masi Magam' festival was celebrated here on Saturday with religious fervour and communal harmony. Utsava deities from nearly 80 temples from Puducherry and Tamil Nadu were brought to Vaithkuppam for `theerthavari' from early morning. Deities from the temples such as Sri Sivasubramania Swami (Mailam), Sri Poyyamozhi Vinayakar (Theevanur) and Sri Aranganatha Swami (Gingee) were brought for occasion.

Police made elaborate arrangements. More than 300 police personnel were deployed for bandboust. Senior Superintendent of Police Chhaya Sharma and the Superintendent of Police Vijayakumar supervised arrangements. A team of 30 trained swimmers were also on rounds.

Masi Magam festival is an important occasion in Puducherry and this was the 101st year in succession for the utsava deity of Sri Mailam Devasthanam. Special arrangements were made by Bommapuram adheenam of Mailam devasthanam for programmes during the next three days to Lord Sivasubramania Swami. Similarly, management of Gingee Aranganathar temple scheduled to hold programmes for the next two days .

A team of 25 retired professors from France attached to the organisation called Art et Vie (Art and Life) participated.

Cuddalore

As part of the Masi Maham festivities, deities from temples across Cuddalore and Villupuram districts were brought to Thevanampattinam coast for "theerthavari." It had attracted a large number of people. At Vriddhachalam, people gathered in good numbers on the banks of Manimuktha, to celebrate the event.
