Andhra Pradesh Police triumphs

HYDERABAD: Andhra Pradesh Police emerged champions in the 27th Royal Club invitation hockey tournament for the B. Devarajan Trophy with an emphatic 7-0 win against Osmania University in the final at Gymkhana Grounds here on Saturday.

The policemen shot into lead in the fourth minute when left-in Jagadish dribbled his way into the striking zone before essaying a neat carpet drive to find the target.

In the 21st minute, centre-half Suresh made it 2-0 and within three minutes centre-forward Suri Babu was in the scoring act to give a 3-0 lead for APP.

Regular strikes

The story was no different in the second session with the youthful Osmania outfit unable to get its act together.

APP struck at regular intervals with Suri Babu and the speedy Rafiuddin, who was later adjudged `player of the final' being prominent upfront. Rafiuddin struck twice in the 36th and 45th minutes to give a handsome 5-0 lead for Police.

Later, Suri Babu and left-out David Raju scored a goal apiece to complete the tally.

Special prizes

The winner was richer by Rs 3,000 while the runner-up received Rs. 2,000.

Special prizes were given to 14-year-old Rahul Raj of MCH for being the youngest player of the event, Manjunath (player of the tournament), Akshay (best goalkeeper), Rakesh (best defender), Suresh (best `half') and top-scorer Suri Babu for his five goals.

V. Dinesh Reddy, IPS, gave away the prizes.

P. Kantaiah, secretary of the Royal Club which organised the event, thanked V. Hanumanth Rao, treasurer of HHA, for donating the runner-up trophy.

Satyanarayana sizzles

A hat-trick by B. Satyanarayana (38th, 40th and 51st minute) helped host Elamanchili XI to score a 7-1 win over Gudur Hockey Club in the super league of the MLA Cup State-level invitation hockey tournament at Elamanchili on Saturday. Elamanchili also ended the day ahead of Sports Training Centre, Secunderabad on goal average.

Both Elamanchili and STC have won two matches each. The last match between the two on Sunday will decide the title winner.

The other scorers for Elamanchili XI were L. Ramesh (10th and 37th minutes) and M. Lakshminarayana (4th and 29th). P. Sravan Kumar scored GHC's only goal, in the 46th minute.

Elamanchili posts win

Earlier, Elamanchili beat East Godavari 2-0 with Lakshminarayana and Kiran (4th and 50th minute) being the scorers.

STC conceded a goal in both its matches before recording victories.

Sravan Kumar scored for GHC in the 31st minute but STC hit back quickly with Veer Singh scoring a goal three minutes later. G. Vijay Kumar scored the winner.

In the afternoon's match, STC was in arrears early in the game with P. Durga Prasad sounding the boards for East Godavari in the second minute. It took STC more than a quarter of an hour to equalise, when M. Ajay Babu scored the first of his two goals in the 18th minute. Md. Azaharullah Khan (47th), Ajay Babu (48th) and K. Khadar Basha (58th) scored in the second half.
