KOLKATA: National champion Surya Shekhar Ganguly scored a fine victory over International Master S. Vijayalakshmi while the top seed Sergei Tiviakov was shocked by Darmen Sadvakasov in the seventh round at the Gorky Sadan here on Saturday. Tiviakov opted for the Scandinavian defence but the Kazakh GM was well prepared and got a space advantage from the opening. He then exposed the top seed's king to an attack and went on to pocket the point in 37 moves. Diwakar Prasad Singh, Sriram Jha and Geetha Narayanan Gopal also brightened their norm chances. Singh managed to defend a slightly inferior position against Dimitri Komarov of Ukraine, Jha pulled off a stunning victory over Super GM Pantsulaia Levan of Georgia in a long ending. In an all-Indian affair, Gopal went for the advance variation against S. Kidambi's Caro-Kann defence and got a good attack to finish off the game in 48 moves. Gopal was in the joint second position with 5.5 points. Important results (Indians, unless mentioned): Darmen Sadvakasov (Kaz) (6) bt Sergei Tiviakov (Ned) (5); Alon Greenfeld (Isr) (5) drew with Tigran Petrosian (Arm) (5.5); Dimitri Komarov (Ukr) (5) drew with D.P. Singh (5); G.N. Gopal (5.5) bt Sundararajan Kidambi (4.5); Sriram Jha (5) beat Pantsulaia Levan (Geo) (4); S. Vijayalakshmi (4) lost to S.S. Ganguly (5).
