NEDUMBASSERY: Giving a fillip to the tourism potential of Lakshadweep, the UB Group-promoted Kingfisher Airlines will launch weekly services connecting Bangalore, Kochi and Agatti on Saturday. Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation Praful Patel and Kingfisher Airlines chairman Vijay Mallya are expected to arrive at the Cochin International Airport on a special flight and would then board the airline's maiden flight to Agatti. To begin with, the service will be operated on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. An ATR aircraft capable of carrying 42 passengers would be used. The demand to introduce an ATR service to Agatti has been a longstanding one. The flight, IT 2453, from Bangalore would arrive here at the Cochin International Airport at 12.35 p.m. and leave for Agatti at 1 p.m. In the return direction, the flight, IT 2454, is scheduled to arrive here from Agatti at 4.05 p.m. and leave for Bangalore at 4.30 p.m. Presently, only Indian operates services, six in a week, between Kochi and Agatti. However, the number of seats available is limited as a Dornier aircraft is being used. It can accommodate only 12 passengers. During the peak tourism season the non-availability of seats causes hardships.
