Clear the air on MCD polls: BJP

Staff Reporter

State Election Commissioner urged to notify civic elections

NEW DELHI: In a letter to State Election Commissioner S.P. Marwah, Delhi BJP president Harsh Vardhan has demanded that after reserving afresh the seats notified for the reserved category in the upcoming MCD elections under a foolproof formula, he should notify the polls immediately so that they can be held on time and without any discrimination and favouritism.

Dr. Vardhan said Minto Road Councillor Ramesh Dutta had filed a petition in the Delhi High Court objecting to the formula fixed for the reserved seats for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Castes (Women) and Women (General) out of the total 272 notified MCD seats after the new delimitation exercise by the Election Commission of Delhi.

Since the judgment has been reserved till March 5, he said an atmosphere of uncertainty exists among the voters, political parties, candidates and all the other people and traders connected with the election.

"The people are worried whether the elections would be held on time or not. The political parties have made all the preparations to participate in the elections. The party workers have been deputed for the preparations of election and the process of selecting the possible candidates is progressing fast. If the elections are postponed in this situation then it will not be in the interest of the public, the Constitution or the democracy,'' he said.

The BJP leader has written to the State Election Commissioner that reservation should be made in such a manner that there is no discrimination or favouritism for any area or class.
