Timber smuggling: one arrested

Udhagamandalam: One person was arrested in connection with a case relating to smuggling of timber near Gudalur on Friday.

According to the District Forest Officer, Gudalur division, K. Kandasamy, a forest party on patrol duty at Kethlangadu grew suspicious about a jeep proceeding on the same road.

Before it could be intercepted, four persons had jumped out from the vehicle and run away.

The team found pieces of rose wood and teak wood in the vehicle. The vehicle and the contraband were seized. Jeep owner Abu Taheer was arrested at Gudalur.

Demonstration

Under the aegis of the Malaivazh Mahalir Mempaatu Sangam and the Makkal Sattamaiyam, a demonstration was staged at the Independence Square here on Saturday. According to K. Vijayan of the Makkal Sattamaiyam, it was in protest against the alleged inaction of the police in a case relating to dowry harassment.
