CHENNAI: Judiciary should be given financial autonomy to encourage independent functioning of courts, Supreme Court Judge AR. Lakshmanan said here on Saturday. Though courts collected several crores of rupees as fine every year, it was handed over to the Government on which the courts were dependant for all their needs, including developing infrastructure, he said, during an interaction with final year B.A.B.L. (Honours) students at the School of Excellence in Law of Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University. The funds should be given to the courts to help maintain their independence. Earlier, in his address to the students, the Judge laid stress on the need for giving equal opportunities to women. "It is time for all development and educational policies to take into account the role of women." He also said that students should put an end to politicisation of college campuses.Four wings of the legal profession judges, members of the Bar, court officials and the litigant public should act jointly for effective and efficient dispensation of justice. Only when court officials and the public cooperate can courts effectively perform their duties.
Technical knowledge
To keep pace with the growth of technology, advocates should equip themselves with technical knowledge for providing efficient service to clients, court and society, he said. Vice-Chancellor S.S.P. Darwesh and Director in-charge, School of Excellence in Law, P. Vanangamudi, were present.
