Swabodhini caters for a wide spectrum of children
|
CHENNAI:
Fundraisers seem to be the flavour of the season, with special movie screenings and musical performances being conducted to find funds for deserving NGOs.
When Swabodhini, a school for Special Children at Valmiki Nagar decided to raise funds, it narrowed in on S.Ve.Shekher's popular Tamil comedy `Ellarum Vanga.'
The comedian-dramatist-MLA staged the play at Narada Gana Sabha on February 23.
Occupational therapy
The school was set up by Radha Ganesan in 1989 to cater for the special needs of four children. It has grown rapidly since then, and today accommodates 60 students (aged between 3 and 25) and imparts occupational therapy to another 40 children.
Yeoman service
Swabodhini caters for a wide spectrum of children, including those with autism, Attention Deficit Hyperkinetic Disorder, developmental delay, Down's syndrome and learning difficulties.
Great leverage
The ideal teacher-student ratio of 1:6 gives it a great leverage while working with the children, according to Anuradha Mahesh, parent-trustee of the Trust.
