Call for code to regulate advertisements
Special Correspondent
CHENNAI:
It is high time that the Government thought of some code to regulate advertisements, as they are an important tool for social communication, the former Chief Election Commissioner, T.S. Krishnamurthy, said on Saturday.
Distributing the Kalki Sadasivam Memorial Trust Award, he said advertisement was the best medium for social, commercial and political communication. Unfortunately, it was being misused by some who indulged in activities that affected communal harmony. A majority of the advertisements carried less than 50 per cent truth.
He recalled that a few years ago, finance companies engaged celebrities for deposit mobilisation. Where were these celebrities when these companies were unable to return the deposits to the public? Advertisers should realise their responsibility and should not fool people, he said.
V. Ramnarayanan, Editor, Sruthi, said the award was being given every year for the best advertisement in the Tamil print media. The award carries a citation and a cash prize of Rs 10,000. This year, the award went to J. Walter Thomson.
Reveendran Solomon of JWT said this was the third time that his company had won the award.
Later, there was a lecture on "Ramarajyam, when," by Solomon Pappiah.
