Change in format of MIG housing

M.L. Melly Maitreyi

Jawaharnagar project of HUDA to be part of bigger scheme

HYDERABAD: Those who had applied for HUDA's Rajiv Gruhakalpa Scheme at Jawaharnagar in Shamirpet mandal last year need not harbour doubts about the venture taking off.

With the recent decision of the State Government to take up a massive scheme to offer affordable houses to salaried and middle-class people in urban areas at prices 25 to 35 per cent less than market prices, HUDA's Rajiv Gruhakalpa scheme at Jawaharnagar would become part of the bigger housing scheme announced by the Government, according to HUDA Vice-Chairman Jayesh Ranjan.

Apartments planned

Accordingly, there would be a change in the format of MIG housing earlier announced by the HUDA. Under the new scheme, to be implemented by the Government as extension of Rajiv Gruhakalpa, multi-storey apartments would be built in Hyderabad, Vijayawada, Visakhapatnam and Guntur and other cities. Flats with plinth areas of 1,450 sft, 1,100 sft, 680 sft and 450 sft would be offered for sale to four categories -- high, middle and lower income groups and economically weaker sections.

It may be recalled that HUDA announced its intention of constructing 800 sft flats priced at Rs. 6 lakhs to make housing affordable to lower and middle-income groups and invited applications last year. While HUDA planned to construct 1,500 flats, only 181 applicants who fulfilled the eligibility criteria laid down by the HUDA had applied.

The construction of flats under the Government scheme would be entrusted to APIIC, Andhra Pradesh Housing Board and HUDA in twin cities. But the area where each of the above agencies would take up construction and design of the apartments is yet to be decided. A meeting to be held next week would take a decision on these issues and a notification for the housing scheme would be issued in the second week of March, Mr. Ranjan said. The construction is likely to commence in April. Mr. Ranjan also said that the eligibility criteria for the houses under the new scheme would be simpler than the ones announced by HUDA for its Jawaharnagar housing scheme.

Under the new scheme, the period of residency of applicant has been reduced to five years from eight years.
