dated March 5, 1957: Solitary vote

A solitary vote cast in a polling station in Balipara constituency cost the Government approximately Rs. 700. The polling booth set up in the transferred areas of the Balipara frontier tract at the foot of the Himalayas in a difficult terrain did not attract any voter till late afternoon of March 2. At the fag end of the day, a lone shepherd, wending his way home with the herd, walked into the polling booth and exercised his franchise. The polling booth was manned by seven persons and the Government had to spend about Rs. 700 for sending polling officials and materials to this inaccessible area.
