Price review panels mooted

Measures initiated to check price rise `inadequate'

ELURU: Federation of West Godavari District Consumers' Association on Sunday urged the district administration to constitute price review committees with representatives from consumer organisations and political parties to keep under control prices of essential commodities. B.Bangaraiah, member of the State Consumer Protection Council, made a plea to this effect at a meeting of the District Food Advisory Committee here.

Price of onion

The measures initiated by the government were inadequate, he said. Mr. Bangaraiah said people in rural areas were deprived of purchasing onion at Rs. 6.50 per kg as the offer was confined to rythu bazars in urban centres only. He complained that fair price shop dealers were selling essential commodities at a price which is more by at least 50 paise per kg due to lack of supervision. The government had been claiming to be distributing four litres of kerosene for each white cardholder. In reality, the dealers were giving only 2.5 litres per card, he charged. Joint Collector V. Durga Das, who chaired the meeting, asked oil companies to help launch `Deepam' scheme under which 1,400 LPG connections were supposed to be provided to BPL families in the district.
