Rewards for best performing police stations

Special Correspondent

Part of image-building exercise, says DIG of police

VILLUPURAM: As part of efforts to improve the police image, Deputy Inspector General of Police (Villupuram Range) G.K. Vanniabperumal has announced rewards for the best performing police stations under his jurisdiction, encompassing Villupuram and Cuddalore districts.

Mr. Vanniabperumal told The Hindu on Sunday that based on certain criteria such as the manner of treating petitioners, accepting petitions, turnout and goodwill earned from the people, the police stations would be selected.

After making the assessment for a month, the winners would be announced. It was a follow-up of the "Police Image Project" workshop held here recently.

He said more than the crime detection and recovery of the stolen property, what mattered the most was how the police personnel deal with petitioners.

Those, who had lost their valuables and property or met with an accident or were involved in any other cases, would be emotionally disturbed, and if the policemen treated them with rudeness it would be amounting to adding insult to injury. Therefore, an effort had been made to sensitise the police on how to treat the petitioners with politeness and humaneness.

General impression

He further said experience had shown that wherever the police acted with understanding, the public remembered them with gratitude. If the personnel in a police station worked with a team spirit, just as in a family, the situation would greatly improve, he opined. It was with the aim of fostering such inter-personal relations and cultivating better rapport with the people he had come out with the reward proposal, Mr. Vanniabperumal added.
