PEACEFUL: A vehicle-free Beach Road in Puducherry on Sunday.

PUDUCHERRY: The traffic police department is planning to make the Beach Road a vehicle free zone on all days in evenings.

A trial was already on to elicit the views of public about the proposal.

"For the last 23 days we have closed the road for vehicles on a trial basis from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The trial would continue till March 16 to get the opinions of the public," a traffic police officer told The Hindu .

Barring a few hotel and guesthouse owners along the Beach Road, the public, especially the beach walkers and tourists, had welcomed the idea, he noted. "We have talked to a number of people during the trial and majority of them are happy. We would continue the effort and people can send in their suggestions either to the Superintendent of Police, Traffic," said Traffic Police Inspector Selvam, who is overseeing the arrangements during the trial period.

The police have mooted the plan following public support for making the road vehicle-free zone during weekends, which has been in place for the past several years.

As per the proposed plan, no vehicles would be allowed to enter the Beach Road from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. during weekdays and from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. during weekends.

However, employees of Government offices and other establishments situated along the road would be given exemptions. There would be five exit points for them, he said.

The vehicles would be allowed to park near the French memorial and on one side of Dumas Street, according to the proposal.
