KOZHIKODE: With solid waste posing a major issue in urban planning and management, the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) has launched an awareness campaign on solid waste management at Kalandithazham here. Solid waste management is the main theme this year of the National Environment Awareness Campaign (NEAC) of the MoEF. The Centre for Environment and Development, Thiruvananthapuram, is coordinating the programme and the Darsanam Samskarika Vedi, Chelavoor, is implementing the different activities conceived under the project. A major component is the conversion of biodegradable waste into vermi compost, the organisers said. They said different activities, including seminars on the theme and lecture demonstrations, had been planned. On March 11 and 12, a workshop as well as a demonstration on domestic waste management would be held at Mahila Mandalam, Vellimadukunnu. The basic objective was addressing the issue of urban waste in a sustainable and people-friendly manner, the organisers said.. The MoEF would provide the beneficiary fund and related assistance for setting up units for converting biodegradable waste into compost. Deputy Mayor P.T. Abdul Lateef formally launched the awareness campaign at a programme organised at Kalandithazham recently. The first initiative in this direction was the cleaning of the banks of the Kuttiadi Irrigation project at Chelavoor. The programmes planned included cleaning of public places, training in manufacture of vermi compost and setting up of vermi compost units involving women.
