Andhra Pradesh women finish on top

CHENNAI: Andhra Pradesh bagged the honours in the women's section with a tally of 749 points in the junior national weightlifting championship, which concluded here on Sunday. With 564 points, Manipur finished a distant second.

The men's team honours went to Uttar Pradesh with 661 points with Andhra Pradesh a close second with 659 points. Rustam Sarang (Chattisgarh) was adjudged the best male lifter and the distinction in the women's section went to Andhra's S. Yamini.

On the final day, Tamil Nadu lifter V. Kumar, a silver medallist in the recent National Games, topped in the plus 105 kg category.

The results: Men: 85 kg: 1. Baljit Singh (Pun) 126 kg (snatch) 150 kg (clean and jerk) 276 kg; 2. Chandrakant Mali (Mah) 126-145-271; 3. Ranjit Gaekwad (Mah) 120-148-268.
