BJP opposes `Nishabd'

HYDERABAD: The State BJP has objected to film "Nishabd", describing it as `cultural pollution'. The film stars Amitabh Bachchan and Jiah Khan and depicts love between a teenager and a 60-year-old man. N. Ramchander Rao, party's official spokesman, said here on Sunday that the film `destroys Indian ethos and values'. — Special Correspondent

CITU rally

HYDERABAD: Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) State committee has called for a `Chalo Assembly' rally on March 22 to press for its 21 charter of demands including extension of PPF and welfare measures to unorganised labourers.

The panel wanted the Government to adopt West Bengal model of PPF as also the welfare measures adopted for unorganised sector workers in Kerala and Tamil Nadu. — Special Correspondent

Held on theft charge

ANANTAPUR: The police arrested six members of a gang allegedly involved in theft of electrical conductors. Anantapur DSP G.S. Karunakar said 80 km long electrical conductors costing Rs. 2.14 lakhs was seized from them. — Staff Reporter

Children suffer burns

KADAPA: Four children sustained burns in Chennamrajupodu in Railway Kodur mandal on Saturday, while they were setting fire to crackers. Sivaram (7), Sivajyothi (5), Ramamurthy (9) and Ashok (10) had opened crackers, poured sulphur powder on a paper and burnt it, according to the police. — Staff Reporter

3 killed in accident

NIZAMABAD: Three persons were killed and two others injured in a road accident under the Kamareddy rural police station limits on Saturday night. The deceased were identified as Mohammad Khaja (26) and Feroze (28) of Kamareddy. The third victim is yet to be identified. According to Assistant SI M. Manohar, a trolley autorikshaw had hit the motorbike on the National Highway-7 killing the two on the spot. The other person, who was travelling in the autorickshaw, succumbed to injuries at a hospital. — Staff Reporter

Naidu's remark flayed

Rajahmundry: BJP State general secretary K. Lakshman has condemned the statement of TDP president N. Chandrababu Naidu that if voted to power in the 2009 Assembly elections, the party would abolish Legislative Council. If that was the case, why was the party putting up candidates for this Council election, he asked. — Staff Reporter

Plea for scholarships

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Backward Classes Welfare Association has urged the Government to release Rs. 50 crores towards scholarships for BC students.

In a letter to the Minister for BC Welfare Minister, D. Srinivas, he demanded that all eligible BC students to be given scholarships. — Special Correspondent

All set for Inter exam

KURNOOL: All arrangements have been made at 74 centres for the Intermediate Public Examination (IPE), which on start on Monday. A total of 55,543 students will take the exam, 26,765 for first year and 29,378 for second year. The second year exam will start on Tuesday. — Special Correspondent

Free asthma camp

KURNOOL: Free asthma camp for police personnel and their families was conducted at the office of Deputy SP here on Sunday. G. Kullayappa, retired chest specialist, conducted the camp. Fire accident

KADAPA: Some 500 fibre latrine basins were gutted in old municipality office here causing a loss of Rs. 1 lakh when sparks emanating while cutting iron girders from the building's roof caused the accident. — Staff Reporter

Sugarcane destroyed

KADAPA: Sugarcane crop was destroyed in a fire in 12 acres in Chinthalapalle in Kalasapadu mandal causing a loss of Rs. 4 lakhs. Tahsildar Raghuramaiah and revenue secretary inspected the crop. — Staff Reporter
