HYDERABAD: Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy has said that loans to the tune of Rs. 5,000 crores will be extended to the self-help groups (SHGS) in 2007-08.

Reviewing programmes for the welfare of women in the State on Sunday, Dr. Reddy said last year loans worth Rs. 3,500 crores had been extended to SHGs through bank linkages. He wanted officials to effectively implement the programmes.

Houses too

According to a press note issued by the Chief Minister's Office, Dr. Reddy said that under the Indira Kranti Patham itself 6.5 lakh SHG groups were extended loans while houses for weaker sections were being registered in their names. The Government had earmarked Rs. 1001 crores for programmes under the Women and Child Welfare Department in the latest budget.

Expressing concern over female foeticide, Dr. Reddy said the Government had initiated action against all those who were encouraging scanning to determine the sex of the child.
