MEG wins title

KOTTAYAM: MEG, Bangalore and Central Railway, Mumbai lifted the men's and women's titles at the 13th YMCA all-India basketball tournament which concluded at the Nehru stadium here on Sunday.

MEG's overcame Indian Bank 75-70 while Central Railway beat Southern Railway 54-44.

The men's final was close with the brilliant shooting skills of M. Manoj proving decisive in the end. His two three-pointers helped MEG come back into the match.

With little over seven minutes to go, Indian Bank was leading 61-56, due to the efforts of B. Saravanan and C.V. Sunny, but Manoj's two scoring shots turned the tables. Besides, Manoj, MEG was also well served by Peter John and Sweeto Francis.

Earlier, Central Railway stunned Southern Railway with Geo Blessen's blocks and S. Indu's scoring skills proving crucial. The Mumbai side had lost to the Chennai outfit in the round-robin league three days ago.

With Geo Blessen guarding the free-scoring Geethu Anna Jose and Indu helping with baskets with the support of P.K. Ambily and Jiju Jose, Central Railway was in control almost throughout. The Chennai side was let down by the usually reliable trio of Nitya, Deepa and Adhirai.

The results: Men: Final: MEG 75 (Peter John 17, M. Manoj 14, Sweeto Francis 12, Linel Antony 12) bt Indian Bank 70 (Pulneshwaran 17, S. Aravind 15, Thangadurai 16, B. Saravanan 11).

Semifinals: Indian Bank, Chennai 65 (Pulneshwaran 14, Thangadurai1 3) bt KSEB, Thiruvanathapuram 50 (K. Hareesh 19, R. Manoj 18).

Women: Final: Central Railway 54 (S. Indu 19, P.K. Ambily 10, Jiji John 10) bt Southern Railway 44 (Geethu Anna Jose 22).

Round-robin league: Southern Railway 42 (Geethu Anna Jose-13) bt KSEB 35 (Soniya Joseph 12, S.S. Anjanna 11).
