KOLKATA: Grandmaster Darmen Sadvakasov of Kazakhstan kept the lead with seven points defeating G.N. Gopal in the eighth round of the 10-round Swiss league $20,000 prize money second Kolkata Open international chess tournament at the Gorky Sadan here on Sunday. Gopal, a class 12 student from Kochi, played the English attack against Sadvakasov's Sicilian defence and held his own until the endgame where he erred to hand over the point on the 73rd move. Gopal, however, would get his maiden GM norm provided he drew the next round. Half a point behind the leader was GM Tigran Petrosian of Armenia. He had an excellent win over National champion Surya Shekhar Ganguly. Playing with black pieces of a Ruy Lopez game, Petrosian put Ganguly under pressure on the queenside to win in 56 moves. Top seed Sergei Tiviakov of The Netherlands drew against GM Dimitri Komarov of Ukraine which did not help the former in his quest to win the meet. Important results: (Indians, unless mentioned): G.N. Gopal (5.5) lost to Darmen Sadvakasov (Kaz) (7); S.S.
