Quit, BJP tells Achuthanandan

Special Correspondent

Seeks white paper on ADB loan accord

Thiruvananthapuram: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) State president P.K. Krishnadas has demanded that Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan resign since he has lost the trust of his Cabinet colleagues.

Addressing a press conference here on Sunday, Mr. Krishnadas said the Left Democratic Front (LDF) Government was trying to impose the Asian Development Bank (ADB) loan on the people.

The Chief Minister was forced to buckle under the pressure of his Ministers on the decision clearing the ADB loan agreement. He had lost the moral right to continue in office. If the Chief Minister was sincere about his opposition to the unfavourable conditions in the loan document, he should resign and lead an agitation against a loan that was against the interests of the people, he said.

Mr. Krishnadas also criticised the Communist Party of India (CPI) for its dubious stand on the ADB loan agreement. The party's stand that it had agreed to the loan agreement only to prevent the resignation of the Minister for Local Self-Government was rather ``childish.'' It clearly exposed the lack of the party's commitment to the people, he said.

The BJP leader said his party was opposed to the ADB loan as it posed a question mark on the State's financial independence. It would continue to organise agitations against the ADB loan that would enslave the people of the State.

He also demanded a white paper on the conditions agreed by the United Democratic Front (UDF) Government, the amended versions of the LDF Government and the new conditions that it had agreed to in relation to the ADB loan.

Mr. Krishnadas also wanted the State Government to take effective steps to tackle pollution in the Periyar river.
