"Stepmotherly treatment continues"

CHENNAI: Though welcome, they are at best "cosmetic tinkering which is too little, coming too late," was how the National Confederation of Small Industry (NACOSI) president, DE. Ramakrishnan, described the budget proposals for micro and small enterprises (MSEs).

Noting that stepmotherly treatment of the enterprises continues, he said in a release the ostensible benefits intended by measures would hardly benefit the units in reducing their transaction cost and helping them build capital, which was necessary to improve their competitiveness.

Mr. Ramakrishnan said absence of any announcement extending the Credit Linked Capital Subsidy Scheme, which is scheduled to expire this month, was a major disappointment. The scheme was of importance to the MSEs from the perspective of their modernisation and technological development and it was similar to the Technology Upgradation Fund for the textile industry. Continuation of the Fringe Benefit Tax for the MSEs and the no provision of additional corpus for the Credit Guarantee Fund Trust Scheme were also disappointing , he said. — Special Correspondent
