CHENNAI: The first international conference on telemedicine will be held here in November under the auspices of Apollo Hospitals, Sankara Nethralaya and Sri Ramachandra Medical University. The conference, to be supported by Indian Space Research Organisation and the Department of Science and Technology, will be an opportunity for pioneers to share problems they are facing in rural India. It will review current issues in developing countries and discuss disease surveillance and tele-education. A trade exhibition on the need-based, cost-effective customised technology and a pre-conference workshop will also be conducted. S.S. Badrinath, chairman, Sankara Nethralaya; Preetha Reddy, chairman, Apollo Hospitals Group; L.S. Satyamurthy, coordinator, Telemedicine, ISRO; K. Selvakumar, chairman, Telemedicine, SRMC; Saroj Mishra, secretary, Telemedicine Society of India, Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute, Lucknow; and Michael Nerlich, president, International Society for Telemedicine and eHealth (ISfTeH), Germany, addressed a press conference here on Saturday.
Interacted
Dr. Saroj Mishra and Dr. Michael Nerlich interacted through videoconferencing with reporters. Dr. Nerlich said ISfTeH, a non-profit, non-government organisation, was closely related to the World Health Organisation. It helped disseminate information and knowledge to the international community. Dr. Mishra sought continuous ties with the international body in research and development that could help in the manufacture of low-cost devices.
