Badal plans to scrap provision on water sharing

CHANDIGARH: Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal has said his government would scrap a provision which allows Haryana and Rajasthan to get water as per their share existing in 2004, when the Congress government passed an Act annulling water-sharing pacts with neighbouring states.

Former Chief Minister Amarinder Singh-led govermment had passed the Punjab Termination of Agreements Act 2004, which annulled various river water-sharing agreements between Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan and Himachal Pradesh.

SAD, which had supported the bill moved by the Congress government on July 12, 2004, said it would bring in a law to scrap Section 5 of the Act, which allowed sharing of water with Rajasthan and Haryana to continue.

Badal said at Anandpur Sahab yesterday that the promise to scrap the Section had been made by him at his pre-election rallies. - PTI
