BERHAMPUR: Two poachers and illicit timber traders fell into a pre-planned trap of Kandhmal district police near Baliguda on Saturday night. According to Kandhamal Superintendent of Police S.K.Gajbhiye, two leopard skins and a skull of deer were seized from them. These two persons were wanted by forest officials and police for the past three years and they were always managing to dodge the police. They were part of a major gang involved in transporting timber, wild animal skins and skeletons from south Orissa through forest areas of Kandhamal district. One of them hails from Ganjam district while the other is from Kandhamal district. Interrogation is on to get to root of their network. On a tip-off, the police laid the trap and arrested the two poachers at Dangapadar square near Baliguda.
Transit point
Kandhamal district is being used as a transit point for poachers to trade skins and bones of leopards, deer, ivory, skeleton of elephants etc due to its inaccessible forest areas and connectivity to urban areas outside the State. Usually they are collected from forest areas of undivided Koraput district and Kandhamal district. In the past similar arrests of poachers and illegal traders of animal skins have been reported in Baliguda and Daringbadi areas of Kandhamal district.
