Presidency College to have bioinformatics centre

Centre has sanctioned Rs. 20 lakh for the college

Chennai: The Presidency College will soon have a bioinformatics centre that uses latest technology to promote Biology teaching and research.

The Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science and Technology, has given the college a grant of Rs. 20 lakh. Ten computers with high-speed access would be connected to a nationwide network of biotechnology resource centres.

"Ours is the only government college that has been given the facility in Tamil Nadu," said Presidency College principal S. Ramanathan. A few other universities and private colleges in the State have also been recommended for the project.

S. Rajarajan, Head of Microbiology Department, will coordinate the centre. "At the Presidency College, the bioinformatics centre will focus on drug development," he said.

Software on biogenomics, genetics and pharmacological sciences will be available at the centre. Students of other colleges would also be given access to its facilities.

The 4,000-student strong college will also offer an updated curriculum beginning the next academic year. Undergraduate programmes in Commerce and Computer Applications for hearing-impaired students are also to be introduced as evening college courses.
