Workshop on `Enabling Eco-Friendly Shelter' held in Chennai

CHENNAI: The Government should take initiative in promoting sustainable green building concepts, said experts at a workshop held on Sunday.

According to president of IT Parks and Infrastructure Developers Association (ITIDeA) V. Kalyanaraman, builders should adopt green building initiatives that are energy-efficient and sustainable. He said promoters could register themselves with the Hyderabad-based Green Building Council and take the help of certified professionals to procure certification. "These certifications are valid for five years and are renewable based on further evaluation," he said at the workshop on `Enabling Eco-Friendly Shelter' seminar organised by Rotary International District 3230 and ITIDeA.

The State Government, said convenor K.S Jayaraman, could promote such initiatives by providing incentives in the form of soft loans or tax subsidies.

The workshop had sessions on green architecture, climatic designs, energy efficiency in buildings and eco-friendly lightings.
