Municipality firm on tank takeover

Staff Reporter

For underground drainage project

TAMBARAM : The Ullagaram-Puzhuthivakkam municipality is firm on going ahead with its plan of taking over a tank as the site for a pumping station for the proposed underground drainage project. A couple of days ago, local body authorities installed a board at the compound wall of the Draupadi Amman temple tank, which said that the `land' was selected as the site for the pumping station.

Officials said that even in records available with the Revenue Department, the land on which the tank was located was classified as `grama natham'. Only a small section of people were protesting, they said, adding that there was no alternative site available nearby to construct the pumping station.

However, residents sought to know if it was not a tank, then why the local body spent a few lakhs to give it a face-lift two years ago.

Though they do not stage a protest now as they did a few days ago, they said they would do all they could to protect the water body.
