CHENNAI : The Department of English and Foreign Languages of SRM University, Kattankulathur, organised a two-day national conference on March 1 and 2 on Industry Institute Inglish Interface (4Is), with a focus on improving communication skills of the students to make them industry-ready while getting placements. The conference was aimed at bridging the gap between the teaching approaches of the institution and the expectations of the industry by suggesting innovative methodologies to train the students for better employability. It also provided the industry-institute interface required to explore the demands of the industry and to impart tailor-made training programmes on communication skills. Abraham Benjamin Samuel Head, Department of English and Foreign Language, said that the interface helped the language trainers and students get first-hand information on the needs of industry.
Knowledge capital
K. Shanker, Managing Director of Technip India Private Limited, who inaugurated the conference, said that with India all set to become the knowledge capital of the world, the industry needed to keep pace with the rapid growing economy. In this context, institutions should provide men and women with necessary communication skills to make industry grow. There are several talented students in rural areas, who can read, write and understand English, but lack communication skills, he said.
