CHENNAI : Police conducted simultaneous raids at 20 recreation clubs in T. Nagar police district and seized cash. Following a tip-off that many people allegedly indulged in gambling in the recreation clubs situated in the Pondy Bazaar, Mambalam, Vadapalani and Virugambakkam areas, special teams were formed. As per a court directive, the police have been conducting search operations in the recreation clubs in the presence of Advocate Commissioners. Following specific complaints brought to the notice of the police, Commissioner Letika Saran directed the T. Nagar police district officers to deal with the violators with an iron hand. Deputy Commissioner of Police (T. Nagar) S. Baskaran said here on Sunday that the Assistant Commissioners of Police from T.Nagar, Vadapalani and Ashok Nagar supervised the operation carried out by seven teams in the respective sub-divisions in the last two days. The teams found that more than five recreation clubs in Vadapalani, Virugambakkam, KK Nagar and MGR Nagar police station limits conducted video games without licence. A few other clubs sold lottery tickets to members, which were banned. The police also arrested Suresh of Jafferkhanpet on charges of selling ganja. The teams seized Rs 7,490 in cash and registered 17 cases against 93 persons, a press note said.
